Costumes Are Fun, Fun Are Costumes

In my childhood, emulating my favorite cartoon characters is one of my favorite things to do. There’s no stopping me once I have taken interest in a character, whether it be from American or Japanese cartoons. And because of this, my family regularly gives me costumes of my favorite cartoon characters, for they are rather supportive of me and any hobbies that I may have. I was so excited and happy when I got my first costume! Rather than just acting like my favorite characters, I can now look just like them. However, I would just wear them during the night time, for they will be more comfortable than wearing it during the day.

Nowadays, I don’t wear costumes anymore, at least not on a regular basis now that I am now a grown up. Despite of that, my interest in costumes remains the same. One of my hobbies now is collecting costumes. Compared back then, the costumes now are highly detailed, in which I am truly fascinated. At times I would go to the net browsing for costumes. The sight of different costumes like Superman costumes, a Naruto costume (from the Japanese Anime), StarCraft Costumes, a Mr Potato Head Costume, the Simpsons costumes, and more really makes me happy.

Halloween and Christmas are the usual seasons that you can wear your costumes, for during these seasons many people are throwing costume parties. However, there are now costume roleplay or more commonly known as “cosplay” conventions. In cosplay conventions, people gather together wearing various kinds of costumes. Although the word cosplay is originally coined in the east, people from other countries, especially in the west, are beginning to accept the term as well. The cosplay events between the east and the west are basically the same. Their only difference it that western cosplay events commonly feature characters from western cartoons. The Japanese, like in the west, features their own cartoon characters. But still you will see anime characters in western cosplay conventions and vice versa, for this rule is really not written in stone.

Funny thing about cosplaying these days is that you are not restricted to your gender when it comes to costume choices. During cosplay events, you can crossdress without raising suspicions about your gender preference. So it is also common to see a boy wearing a Japanese high school girl costume or a girl wearing a Mr Potato Head Costume.

Even if it is only though clothes, costumes can make your fantasy a reality. Because it really is fun, many adults have joined the costume craze. As for me, I think when I have the time I will join some of these events, for they seem a lot of fun. You too should try it at least once. After all, millions of happy cosplayers can’t be wrong!
